CBD And Asthma: Should You Use CBD For Asthma

by Neil Mumby / 14 November 2020 / Published in CBD Explained, CBD Health Benefits
CBD and Asthma

So what do we know about CBD and Asthma?

Now, Louis Armstrong, an American Trumpeter and one of the most prominent jazz influencers, was quite an avid cannabis smoker, and he had quite a reliable pair of lungs!

But, all jokes aside, could CBD, a novel cannabinoid found in cannabis plants, be a useful adjunct for asthma patients?

Asthma attacks, where the typical asthmatic symptoms rapidly flare or worsen, cause more than two million global hospital visits every year. While symptoms are usually inconvenient when managed with modern medicine, asthmatic damage can be dangerous in the wrong circumstances.

Can CBD Help With Asthma?

CBD oil and asthma seem to go hand in hand. Asthma involves a great deal of inflammation, and cannabidiol is shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Anxiety typically co-occurs with asthma, and modification of the human endocannabinoid system can have anxiolytic or anxiety-relieving effects.

In 2019, a promising study showed a correlation between specific cannabinoid therapies and the rejuvenation of lung function for allergic asthma. Still, more significant research needs to be performed before we can identify whether cannabidiol is an appropriate fit for asthmatic patients.

While we wait for the most up-to-date information to be reviewed by the applicable UK agencies, we highly recommend consulting with your doctor if you are interested in using CBD.

With the help of expert medical staff, you can effectively begin a CBD regimen in conjunction with the other therapeutic methods that you are currently using.

CBD and Inflammation

Asthma is characterized by inflammation of the airways. Additionally, this inflammation will cause overproduction of mucus, congesting the airways, leading to coughing, wheezing, and trouble breathing.

Cannabidiol promotes activity at both CB1 and CB2 endocannabinoid receptor sites. Both of these receptor types promote anti-inflammation via unique pathways creating a comprehensive, holistic approach to managing inflammatory symptoms.

CBD and Anxiety

Many asthmatic patients suffer from anxiety. The symptoms of asthma can be quite disconcerting. Asthma can cut off the breath, cause pain, and prevent sleep.

The threat of losing access to oxygen is an omnipresent option, creating various anxiety levels in the given individuals. Additionally, the stimulant-like treatments prescribed to manage the physical aspects of asthma also stimulate anxious feelings as a side effect.

Cannabidiol can modify the endocannabinoid system via its many properties. The endocannabinoid network is closely related to mood regulation. Proper care for this network can lead to a reduction in anxious feelings.

While CBD may appear promising, more research is needed to solidify its safety and efficacy in asthmatic patients. If you are looking to enjoy using CBD as a wellness tonic, speak to a qualified professional if you are already taking other medications.

CBD and Muscle Spasms

Bronchospasms, or spasms of the airways, are another essential quality of the asthmatic condition. When these spasms occur, coughing, wheezing, and trouble breathing are sure to follow.

Studies are examining the use of THC containing cannabis as a bronchodilator. This dilation would help the airway expand, negating some of the wheezing symptoms. However, THC can stimulate anxiety.

The endocannabinoid system is intimately connected to the muscular system. By carefully working with this internal network, muscle spasms can be reduced. It is possible that this spasm reduction can apply directly to the airways, reducing the common symptoms of asthma.

CBD and Airflow

The use of specific cannabinoids may help to improve airflow. In one case study, an individual was given three drops of a cannabinoid containing tincture. Fifteen minutes later, their airflow parameters were tested.

The individual was tested for their FEV and PEV. FEV is the airflow when a patient exhales with maximum force. PEF is the peak of airflow that occurs when exhaling.

Both of these parameters doubled with the modification of the endocannabinoid system. This is very promising news for those who suffer from chronic breathing issues.

CBD and Sleep

While asthmatic symptoms play out mostly in the airways, they can also impact sleep. The difficulty breathing and bursts of coughing/wheezing can easily disrupt a good night’s rest.

This organic compound acts as a beautiful nightcap at the end of the day. In fact, studies indicate that endocannabinoid activation can modify sleep stability and duration.

Additionally, asthmatic insomnia can be linked to the anxiety experienced by patients diagnosed with the condition. The reduction in anxiety provided by endocannabinoid care will also help to bolster sleep hygiene.

The CBD Oil Asthma Connection

Cannabidiol may be an excellent, gentle compound to introduce to asthmatic patients. The potential reduction in inflammation, anxiety, and muscle spasms received from modifying the endocannabinoid system could reduce discomfort and emergency symptoms.
