Role of The Endocannabinoid System – Endocannabinoid Tone Explained

by Neil Mumby / 08 January 2019 / Published in CBD Explained, CBD Health Benefits

Research and studies from all over the Internet give insight into the capabilities of CBD and its effects on the body. But possibly more important than how CBD works is why it can affect the human body the way it does.

The role of the endocannabinoid system cannot be understated. The human endocannabinoid system is richly complex and helps maintain homeostasis in many of our vital physical functions. This network has evolved with the many naturally occurring plant compounds that modulate its function. Humans have grown many varieties of cannabis plant over time. It has found a place in many aspects of our daily lives including medicine, food products, fuel and construction materials.

When this vast network is humming along smoothly the endocannabinoid tone is singing correctly. The endocannabinoid tone is the net impact of all functions related to the system. This includes levels of endogenous cannabinoids, activity involving endocannabinoid receptors, and the actions of other systems that are closely related to the endocannabinoid network. If these factors fall out of effective levels, then the body enters a state of endocannabinoid system deficiency.

Role of The Endocannabinoid System

To understand the full scope of the endocannabinoid system its helpful to look at the many networks that relate to the ECS. The endocannabinoid works closely with the immune, hormonal, nervous, and vanilloid pain systems. By having receptors throughout most tissues of the body, this system can monitor many aspects of our physiology.

The ECS (endocannabinoid system) has a set of endocannabinoid receptors and signaling compounds. For those who may be curious, the endocannabinoid definition is simply “endogenous cannabinoid.” That means that these endo-cannabinoid compounds are produced within our body and mind and their corresponding receptors relate to the ECS and respond to both external/internal cannabinoids. As the endocannabinoid network watches the body, it can create endocannabinoid compounds on demand. The pace of the response and the presence of both endocannabinoids and the enzymes that help break them down are two factors that are relevant to the overall functioning of the ECS, and therefore they are crucial in the endocannabinoid tone.

If you’re looking for a more in-depth breakdown of the human endocannabinoid receptors and compounds, feel free to check our Beginner’s Guide to CBD science.

Importance of the Endocannabinoid Tone

The human endocannabinoid system oversees the breaking down and building up of the body. This build up/break down has a substantial impact on the process of disease and disorder in the body. The healthy ECS stands on guard ready to stop disease in its tracks or diminish its signs and symptoms. To-date the most effective way to promote the endocannabinoid tone is by inhibiting the enzymes that break down vital endogenous cannabinoids.

CBD is a critical player in this process. Natural supplementation can reduce levels of the enzyme FAAH, which is responsible for the breakdown of the endocannabinoid AEA. AEA has many functions. Most notably it helps regulate mood, neuroprotection, and immune activity. CBD is non-toxic and displays a very soft but impactful effect on the ECS. Enhancement of the internal endocannabinoid tone is a hot topic in the research field at the moment. The application of enzyme inhibition is currently seen as a fruitful approach to symptom management and a vital method to balance the ECS tone.

Nurturing the endocannabinoid tone can also include finding ways to de-stress and relax. Many foods subtly modulate our ECS. Many of our choices and emotions influence this network as well. Exercising also promotes levels of AEA. Other herbs and terpenes affect this intricate network. Do everything you can to keep healthy and active. If you can put sustained effort into healthy living while enjoying your CBD regimen, you’re guaranteed to keep your body in top shape.
